Rotarian Danielle Jenschke provided the program last Wednesday, outlining the importance of the Hill Country College Fund for Schreiner University. The fund provides scholarships to students that would not otherwise be able to attend college.
Danielle has been with Schreiner for ten years in various positions, including her current position as Director of Development. She explained that 100% of the funds raised go directly to scholarships for students from the surrounding area. Three hundred scholarships are awarded each year, and the goal is to raise $700,000 out of the $1,400,000 needed. Thirty two million dollars has been raised since the inception of the program.
Current nursing student Bailey Pullin also spoke to our club. Bailey is from Harper, and several members of her family are Schreiner graduates, including her mother. She is active in intramural sports and volunteers in several campus events. Receiving the scholarships took the financial pressure off so she could concentrate on her studies.
Michael Bennett is also a recipient of the Hill Country College Fund. Michael had a rough childhood, living with a single mom, and eventually was placed in the Medina Children's Home at age 15, where he finally had stability and did well enough to get into college. He graduated from Schreiner in 2014, and credits his success to the individual attention he received from administrators and teachers who knew him by name.
