Michelle returned to Kerrville this week, 38 years after arriving as a Rotary Youth Exchange student from Brazil. Hosted by the Tivy High School Rotary Exchange program, she spent her exchange year living with the Grotheus, Lemieux, and Crawford families — relationships that have remained meaningful across decades.
Her experience in Kerrville shaped the course of her life. Michelle went on to become a tax attorney in Brazil and later a proud Rotarian herself, inspired by the impact Rotary had on her as a young student. During this visit, she brought her family to meet her former host families and reconnect with Rosa, the longtime Tivy sponsor who supported her exchange year.
Michelle’s Rotary legacy continues through her daughter, who is now participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange program. Michelle is also preparing to serve as the Interact Counselor for her club, carrying forward the same spirit of mentorship that once guided her.
Her story is a powerful reminder of Rotary’s global reach — and how one exchange year can shape generations of service.
