Tivy 2018 Hall of Fame Class

Rotarian Guy Jarvis presented the 2018 Tivy Hall of Fame Class to the club on 8/15/2018.

Back in his prime (just kidding Guy) Guy was quite the athlete himself! Guy graduated from Tivy High School in 1979, served as the Tivy Athletic Booster Club president from 2003-2008, and now currently presides as the chairman of the Tivy Athletic HOF Selection Committee.  As an athlete, Guy dished out 23 assists the night Jon Chambers set the all-time scoring record for most points in one game.  Tivy was 29-4 that year!!  An all-around Kerrville All-Star, Guy has been a member of our club since 1984 and also served as its president from 1994-1995.  And on another note, Guy took time to visit with us on his 37th wedding anniversary.  Thanks Guy!

Guy began his presentation by pointing out that the Tivy Athletic HOF is celebrating its 13th year, and it remains as competitive as ever to garner induction.  There were 62 nominations for the 2018 class alone.  He noted that it is such an honor to be inducted, that many recipients cry, or literally shout out in joy when they learn of their selection.  And with that emphasis, Guy presented the selections for the 2018 Tivy Athletic HOF.

1. The 1965-66 Boys Track - State Semi-Finalist Mile Relay Team

  • Team Members - Jimmy Bill, Daniel Rhodes, Bobbie Peschel, Melvin Fifer; Alternate: Ernest Garcia; Coach Jung
  •  Set record time of 3:22.6 during the 1966 season
  • Member Bobbie Dale Peschel was the 1966 Outstanding Track Award Recipient, record holder in the 2 mile relay at 8:18.9 and record holder in the 880 yard run at 1:57.8.

2. Former Head Tivy Football Coach Mark Smith

  • More wins than any other Head Coach in Tivy history - Career record of 93-34 (73.2% win percentage)
  • Never missed playoffs - Includes two state semi-finalist appearances in 2008 & 2009
  • Coach Smith's 2010 team set new school records in points scored (662) and total offensive yards (6,421)
  • Smith insisted his players conduct themselves with honor and dignity - both on AND off the field.

3. Kyle Yates (Baseball & Football)

  • Two year letter in Tivy Football
    • Unanimous first team All District Safety (also played cornerback, punter & kicker)
    • West Texas Team selection as Place Kicker
    • Team MVP of Special Teams and MVP of Defensive Backfield

  • Four year letter in Tivy Baseball
    • Career .408 Batting Average
    • 24 Home Runs
    • Team MVP Sophomore-Senior Years - Played Pitcher, 2nd Base & Shortstop
    • Excelled as Starting Pitcher at Midland College before accepting scholarship to UT-Austin
    • Drafted 13th round of Major League Baseball Draft in 2004 by Toronto Blue Jays
    • Played in minor league system 2004-2008 before shoulder injury in 2009.
    • Returned to UT-Austin to finish course work and graduate with his degree in 2010.

  • Kyle & his Wife have a two year old son Kalvin.

A Tivy Moment

Guy also highlighted that this would be the first year the HOF Selection Committee would select a "Tivy Moment" to commemorate "An outstanding moment in Tivy Athletics Sports History that exemplifies the Spirit of Tivy Fight Never Dies!"  The 2018 selection celebrates the 1980 basketball team's ten overtime victory over the South San West Cougars - that's right - TEN OVERTIME PERIODS.  See more below:

  • The boys Tivy Antlers Basketball Team won 55-51 over South San West Cougars in 10 overtime periods (score was 43-43 at end of regulation).
  • The game lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes.
  • The game was played 1/4/1980 in Antler Gym on Sidney Baker.
  • Augustus "Gus" Benson lead the Antlers with 25 points.
  • This marked the second longest game (on record) in the United States, trailing only games in North Carolina and West Virginia, each of which lasted 13 OT periods.
  • See the team picture below.
