Hill Country Community College Fund

Last week's meeting was at Shriner University in support of the Hill Country College Fund ("HCCF").  The fund is celebrating four decades of awarding student grants!

Some quick facts about the HCCF (courtesy of the University's website:):
  • Our goal is to raise $625,000 this year to provide tuition grants for Hill Country students to attend Schreiner.
  • 100% of the money raised goes to scholarships for students with need in Bandera, Edwards, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, and Real Counties.
  • With your help Schreiner makes college affordable by distributing nearly $11 million in financial aid each year.
Rotarians Jack Pratt (Current HCCF Campaign Chairman) and Marta Diffen (University Director of Development) were among those who addressed the crowd at the event:

Chairman Pratt mentioned that $11 million-plus each year is distributed in financial aide and mentioned the 2018 fundraising goal was $625,000.  He mentioned that the University expects to give more than 200 grants to approximately 15% of Schreiner's students!

Marta talked about being part of this effort that's grown over the past 40 years.  She emphasized that every gift counts and that the community's generosity enables student to say "Yes we can!"

Former HCCF scholarship recipient Frida de la Garza spoke to the crowd concerning her journey, and the support of the HCCF that made her dreams possible.  You can see her story, along with additional details of the event (courtesy of the Hill Country Community Journal), at http://www.hccommunityjournal.com/article_bc220988-c67a-11e8-a51b-4740e84f4bf2.html .

Rotary News you can Use

This week, we have Bobby Templeton from Ingram ISD.  Many of you will remember Bobby as a past member of this club.  It should be a good presentation as always!

The First Responder's Golf Tournament went off without a hitch!  For those of you who played or sponsored THANK YOU!  We will have the final figures in the next week or so, but it looks like we made about $6,000 that will go towards our First Responder Training Grants.  This is a huge investment in our community & I thank you all for your support.

Our next big event will be Pints for Polio on October 20.  This will not just be a beer event, but also for those wine drinkers.  We have several different wines and beers that will be available along with some good eats!  Mark your calendars to attend this event & help out the Foundation!

Also, make sure you have these other dates on your calendar:

November 7, Veteran's Breakfast

November 21, Thanksgiving Joint Meeting with Kiwanis

December 19, Christmas Party

February 9, Rise Against Hunger & Community Food Drive

Also mixed in late November  and December will be Bell Ringing at Gibson's and Blue Santa.

Thanks!

Robin

Satellite Meeting - September 18, 2018

Satellite Meeting September 18th

Speaker: Lee Johnson
Guest: Mr. Overby from Davidson Freedle Espenhover & Overby, P.C.
Our guest came to give us some great information on the upcoming Kerrville ISD bond. He also talked to us about how there will be voting sites at some of the local schools including; Tivy High School, Hal Peterson Middle School, Nimitz Elementary School, and Starkey Elementary School. This will make voting so much more convenient for parents as well as school staff/teachers.
Lee Johnson was our speaker and he came to talk to us about the new member process for Rotary. He talked to us about the process from when you first fill out your paperwork to when you get to remove your red new member sticker off your name badge. The part he went over the most with us was the orientation and how he makes it fun so people are excited about joining. We brought up the idea to him of our new Satellite members we get in the future being able to join in on his orientations so they can get a more in depth introduction to the club.

Club Business:
We had a group pow wow of sorts this week after our speaker to decide what we want to use the $3,000 towards that Robin has given our club to start a new committee or project. The two top ideas we have thus far are joining the CSI group volunteers to help fix-up/clean up local properties. Their primary goal is to use volunteers to improve the living conditions of primarily low-income and elderly persons in the community, who cannot afford to provide for the upkeep of their homes. Our other idea was to use the money and volunteers to help improve the Doyle Community Center Garden. This garden currently is kept up by the community but they would like to work on improving and beautifying the space.

Trash Pickup

This outstanding group of volunteers was up early on Saturday, picking up trash in our community. We had five students that wanted to get involved as well, including some from the Kerrville Tivy Interact Club!   Also - Thank you to the Stoepel family for the use of the all new Ford F150 Trucks!
Thank you again so much for your help.

Thank You to the following list of awesome volunteers:

Michelle McGinnis
Robin Miears
Todd Odom
Mayor Bill Blackburn
John Lang
Bill Tucker
David Rittenhouse
Max Reinbach
