Gerry Griffin, former director of the Johnson Space Center, provided his thoughts on the U.S. Space program. Gerry has extensive experience at the NASA, including flight director for the Apollo manned missions. He also was a technical advisor for the movie Apollo 13.

Gerry explained that during the race to get to the moon, a number of factors led to the success of the program. There was very little top down leadership, and the engineers were given the latitude to figure out how best to do their job. Space exploration faces a number of challenges now, including lack of a clear destination. There is still much to be learned about the moon, and a manned mission to Mars is still a goal, but private sector will likely play a greater role in future exploration.
