Bill Muldoon provided the program on Cuba, which he and wife Nancy visited in 2013 as part of a sponsored trip through Dartmouth College. Bill’s previous trip was a while back as a fourteen year old, and at the time reminded him of a mix between Miami and Las Vegas. This time, they wanted to go and see Cuba as it was in the 1950s before it will inevitably be modernized through contact with the outside world, now becoming more common. Residents of Cuba are now going to Miami and bringing back goods which have not been available to them for many years.

Bill and Nancy did see a lot of vintage automobiles, but looking closer they are often repaired with whatever is available locally. They found the Cuban people still celebrate their country and freedom of expression is gradually being tolerated. They have one of the highest literacy rates in the world, and send many of their students to other countries for advanced education.

Nancy and Bill Muldoon get the Service above Selfies award for the week for the program on Cuba.
